Outer Island - 18'
The pleasure of shooting across the water, tumbling with waves, feeling united with the elements. Designed by paddler/designer, Jay Babina, this Western Greenland Style kayak has performance, rolling ability, low windage and speed as the top criteria. With very little hull rocker, it has loads of speed for touring, but with a low rear deck and soft chines, it also allows for control and success when perfecting the most challenging Greenland rolls and braces. Whether it’s elegance, fast touring or a rolling machine you’re looking for, this kayak is simply a dream.

Outer Island (October 23rd, 2007)
This is a great boat. It does everything it is supposed to do very well - that would be travel in a straight line quickly and efficiently, handle big seas and rough water, and roll. nn To point out that it doesn't turn easily or carry a lot of cargo is a bit silly because that's NOT what it's supposed to do. If you want to rock garden or expedition, buy another boat. If you want to do both buy two boats. If you want to get out there and make some miles, maybe get some rolling in, try out the GP for a while: then this is your boat.nn Quality is good. Nice looking boat--gets a lot of compliments.

I have made a strip built version of this kayak and it is the easiest kayak I have yet used. I have a Quest(P&H uk) which is fast and stable but next to the OI feels like a cart horse. The OI requires a bit of effort to turn but the stability means it can be leaned effectively to make quick turns. My son borrowed it for a race and came in 1st of all the sea kayaks and was only beaten by those in dedicated racing canoes. nn An excellent design as Jay Babina himself says you will choose it before any other kayak once you have used it. Only complaint is that it has not got much storage, but then it never was designed for long trips.

Outer Island (December 5th, 2004)
I rented a demo Outer Island to do a multi-sport pentathlon. This boat is very fast and quite stable. Despite no great strength or skill I finished high in the kayak leg behind the guys paddling surf skis. I think I'll buy one as a high speed personal cruiser/race boat and even use it on two to three day tours. This is by far the finest feeling kayak I've ever paddled.
